Mali has several wetlands, despite its continentality. They include: river basins and floodplains, lake ecosystems, pond ecosystems, wet ecosystems of wadis and oases. The Niger River Delta forms one of the largest hydrosystems in Africa: it stretches over more than 400 km on either side of the banks of the river, and its width is between 60 and 100 km. This determines a region of 35,000 km², where nearly 800,000 inhabitants find the means of their subsistence, by practicing agriculture, breeding, fishing or trade.
